The Offering of the Poor Widow
Luke 21
Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box. He also saw a poor widow drop in two small copper coins.
Then He said,
“Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, gave all she had to live on.”
I found myself thinking:
“I want to be like this widow. I want to give more than others. I want to love God more than others do. Be more devoted. Sacrifice more. Be better. I want to be the one who God sees and delights in the most.”
But then I paused.
Jesus said—she gave everything she had to live on.
And I thought—I can’t do that.
How could I possibly give everything? I’m not capable of that kind of faith.
I’ll never be able to out-give her.
I’ll never be that faithful.
So… what now?
So I asked the Lord:
“Are You telling me this story because You want me to prove my faith by giving more like she did?”
The Lord answered:
“I love you.”
I said, “What do You mean?”
He said, “God is love.”
And it struck me—if Jesus loves me, then whatever He’s saying must come from love.
So then I asked myself:
Why do I want to give more than others?
Because I want to prove that I have great faith.
And why do I want to prove that?
To show I’m more devoted. That I love God more.
But… will God love me more because of that?
The truth is, He already showed the fullness of His love on the cross.
And I realized… I just wanted to be better than others, to win God’s approval.
But God said—I’m already made complete in Christ.
When He looks at me, He sees Jesus.
He delights in me as He delights in His own Son.
God loves me.
And He doesn’t compare His children to each other.
To Him, each of us is beloved and precious.
Then I asked again:
“So Lord, what does the widow’s offering really mean?”
And He answered:
“The world may have looked down on her—for being a widow, for being poor, for offering just two small coins. They might have dismissed her, thought she had nothing to give. But what the world despises, I lift up high.”
That’s when I received a revelation:
Isaiah 55:8-9
I shouldn’t try to interpret God’s Word through my own limited reasoning.
Another beautiful truth I learned:
God loves me.
He’s teaching me to see the world through His eyes.
If God chose to lift up a poor widow who didn’t even know Jesus,
how much more will He lift me up—His daughter?
The places where the world looks down on me—
He says He will be my completeness.
The places where I look down on myself—
He says, “You are My creation.”
